Transient Beauty, 2007.
This work is primarily a bookwork (published August 2008) but it has a different form in the gallery. The series was inspired by a visit to my mother’s house after her death, where I saw a fallen statue of a goddess, possibly Venus. The book is a journey through mixed thoughts and feelings about the relationship with my mother, and a wider reflection on death and loss of youth.
The project has inspired further research into mythology and the role of femininity in a modern world which is disconnected from nature in many ways.
The images, both in the book and in the gallery, are presented and paced deliberately to challenge the viewer and to critique the way the white cube of the classic book page and the gallery wall can sanitise our emotions and thoughts.
